In class essay 3

This is the first time I am writing a research paper in my life. Therefore, I decided to choose the topic in which I am interested and in can easily write on that based on the books I have read about it. I decided to write about super conductors which are the future of this world. Though they haven’t been used till now because of the extreme conditions in which they can work. But research is done throughout the world about different ways in which super conductors can be used.
I am majoring in electrical engineering and this topic is related to my major. In fact conductors is one of the branches of electrical engineering. Electrical engineering deals with circuits and no circuit is possible without a conductor. I was always interested in conductors after hearing about super conductors three years back and now I have an opportunity to write about it.
It is believed that world loses 40% of its energy due to resistance in the wires i.e. due to conductivity problems. Imagine if super conductors are implemented we will save this 40% of energy and due to this the electricity cost may come down by 40%. Super conductors are materials which conducts electricity with no resistance. But there are some problems associated with super conductors as well. Firstly, they can be used only at low temperatures which are difficult to maintain. Secondly, the cost of materials to produce super conductors is very high. But, research is done to solve these two difficulties and to use super conductors commercially. I think this topic is not only informative but also very interesting as how we all can save the resources of the world.

"Common Sense" - Rhetorical analysis

“Common Sense” was the pamphlet written by Thomas Paine which was published in 1776 in which he talks about why there is need for American independence and argues for self governed nation. Paine uses the basic format of proposal and even after so many years, this piece of writing remains of the best written articles in the history of United States. Paine used the common language of the people which helped him prove his point more effectively.

Paine begins his argument with the basic and theoretical reflections about the British Government and then explains more about the specifics of colonial situation. He then gives various evidences which were easily interpretive and understandable by the common American. Firstly, he gives the difference between the society and the government. While proving his point and giving evidences, he uses several biblical references. Paine launches a direct attack on British Empire stating that its system is too complex and unfair for the entire continent of North America.

Paine also discusses the defects of monarchy and hereditary succession. He uses biblical references to prove these notions. He says that all men are equal and what distinguishes king and his subjects is some unnatural reason. He explains this by giving examples of Gideon and Samuel. Paine also calls hereditary succession an abdominal practice. He criticizes the people who were in favor of British Empire saying that Britain watched America only for economic well being. He also says that British don’t deserve American loyalty because they have been attacking American colonies. According to him, the solution to this problem is independence from the British and for that he also proposed the form of Government which had equal opportunities for all.

Paine directly appealed to colonies to separate from the British Empire. He says “Wherefore, since nothing but blows will do, for God's sake, let us come to a final separation". He says now America is united country but with time it will be difficult to manage the colonies, therefore it is the best time to separate. He also insisted on making relations with other countries.

Pamphlet written by Paine had a great impact on entire America. Things he mentioned in his pamphlet were logical and almost came true. It made people realized that America has to be free from the shambles of British Empire and gain respect around the world as a separate country. His gives his pamphlet an emotional tone along with several logical reasons and narrations. The best part of the pamphlet was the use of common language understood by people which helped him reach to the common public and spread his word around colonies. He uses facts and evidences from various sources to prove his point. The simple style and tone used by Paine made his pamphlet one of the best written and important pamphlets in the history of the world. It is rightly named “Common Sense”.

Spring break 2008

I was eagerly waiting for my spring break beginning from 8th march to 16th march. Though I had nothing special for this break, I decided to go to my uncle’s place in Farmington, Michigan. Since, I think college is really hectic and busy for me with 18 credits this semester, that’s why I seriously needed a break. The only thing I wanted to do in this break was to get enough sleep and I think I was successful in achieving that. For the first time in my life I tried winter sports like skiing and snowboarding which was fun for me. It was a different experience for me trying this new type of sports. Then i went to mall where I shopped for gifts for my family back in India. The best experience for the trip was watching the Detroit pistons game at the palace of the auburn hills. Though I am not a fan of basketball, but I still enjoyed the game and especially the atmosphere in the stadium. This was really good for me, since I relaxed and did not stress out too much. Now I am happy to be back at Purdue after my much enjoyed break and ready to work hard for next six weeks.

Out of class essay 1- MY FACE TO THE WORLD

MY FACE TO THE WORLD

In this world there are different kinds of people. Everyone is different from others and everyone has their own identity. Every individual represents themselves to the world in some or the different way. In this competitive world, everyone wants to be the best and hence wants to represent themselves in the best possible way. I am going to talk that how I represent myself to the world i.e. to my friends, my cousins, my family and my employers. I use facebook to represent myself to this world.
Facebook is the most popular social networking site in the USA. It is one of the most effective tool to represent ourselves to the world. Your facebook page not only gives you a different identity but also lets you stay in touch with your friends, colleagues, employers and anyone around the world you know. Anyone can join facebook. It is really easy to join facebook. People can join different networks on facebook i.e. they can join the network of their school, place where they live, place where they work or study and many other networks and get connected to their friends. Other people in your network can also see your facebook page and know you. For example, if you join network of your high school, all the people from your high school can see your facebook page. In this way your facebook page represents you to your school. With your facebook page you can represent yourself not only to people you know but also to complete strangers.
Facebook page lets you share your personal and academic information with others. You can share your academic information like your high school name, college name, your major and year of graduation. You can also show the courses you are taking or have taken through various applications on facebook page. Facebook applications also allow you to show your employment history which can be really beneficial for your future employers. I use all these features to represent my academic record on my facebook page. One can easily recognize all my academic achievements by looking at my facebook page.
Facebook can be used to share personal information as well. People having access to my facebook page can see my relationship status, birth date, my religion and all those activities I am involved in and what all I enjoy doing. They can also see what movies I like and what books I enjoy reading. Besides this, they can find out what kind of person I am by looking at my photos. I have many photo albums which can represent me like I have albums from the past family vacations and various important family events. This shows that I am really close to my family. I have many applications on my facebook profile associated with soccer which shows that I play soccer and also a big fan of ‘Manchester United’. Facebook also has application where we can write notes which are shown on our facebook page. I have written various such notes for various events expressing my views. Besides there are various other applications where I can do a lot of stuff like play games, show my top friends, show the events I am attending and play music.
Facebook is also very useful besides providing personal and academic information. Some applications like ‘marketplace’ can be used by people to sell and buy various things listed in the application. I have personally sold and brought a lot of things at good prices using this application. It can also be used as an advertising medium by various companies and associations.
I think facebook is a powerful medium to represent myself to the outer world. I put up my information which I want people to know. Being an international student, it has helped me stay in touch and get updates with my friends and family which are thousands of miles away in a different country. It is much easier to know about person by looking at his profile instead of asking him. This tool is really helpful for employers to know about the person they are employing. Facebook is one of the fastest growing social sites and I think it is really effective medium to represent ourselves to this world. It is reightly described as ‘a social utility that connects you with the people around you’.

Out of class essay3

Imagine you turned 18 and your friend gifting you alcohol on your birthday, this may seem to be a dream to you, but it may be true. According to Radley Balko, a senior editor for magazine ‘Reader’, a new chorus of critics says it’s the time to lower the drinking age. There has been debate over the entire nation to lower the drinking age. I personally do not support this. Therefore, I would rebut Radley Balko’s article ‘Back to 18?’ where he suggests and explains that drinking age should be reduced to 18. This article was written on April12th, 2007 on www.reason.com. This article also appeared in www.foxnews.com.
Have you ever thought why teenagers consume alcohol? There may be several reasons for that. They may try it for curiosity, for style statement or maybe because others are doing it. But, I am not in favor of the author to lower the drinking age to 18. The author starts the article by giving the historical view of the drinking age of alcohol and what changes have come up till now. But, I think he hasn’t given the complete view of why the laws have changed and what circumstances have lead to change the drinking age to 21. The historical facts given by the author are incomplete and are presented in such a way that they support author’s point of view instead of giving the true picture. Then the author gives various reasons in the paragraph followed by mentioning the names of people and associations which want Government to lower the drinking age to 18 from the present and appropriate age of 21.
According to the author, US have the highest drinking age in the world as compared to other countries. In some of the countries drinking age is as low as 16. By this author meant that we are different and backward from other countries and not changing to the requirements of the world. This is wrong because US is much more advanced and successful nation than other countries. Author mentions in his article that the human brain continues developing until at least the age of 21. He also supports his point by giving example of study on lab mice done by alcohol expert Dr. David Hanson of State University of New York at Potsdam. I think and most of you will agree with me at we are more responsible at the age of 21 than at 18. A college student will be more mature and responsible than a high school student. Experience not only makes man more intelligent but also makes him more responsible and this lets him take decisions which are good for him and this world.
Author states that high school students in other countries do much better than high school students of US in standardized tests in spite of lower drinking age. I see that there is no connection between studies and minimum age to drink. Students from other countries do well maybe because of the education system in that country. Being an international student, I think education in US has much higher level than in other countries. According to American Medical Association in its article ‘Underage Drinkers at Higher Risk of Brain Damage’ , research shows teen drinkers score worse than their non-drinking peers on vocabulary, visual-spatial, and memory tests, and are more likely to perform poorly in school as a whole. Author says that Government can lower the age and create more laws to set national speed limits, seat belt laws, motorcycle helmet laws and set a national blood-alcohol standard for DWI cases to avoid accidents and unpleasant conditions. But, I think in reality there is a lot to be done to enforce these laws.
According to Dr. John Nelson of American Medical Association, scientific evidence suggests that even modest alcohol consumption in late childhood and adolescence can result in permanent brain damage. Alcohol is not good for health and I think it should be kept out of reach of teenagers. There should be more strict laws for underage drinking and more stringent rules on consumption of alcohol in universities. People who consume alcohol suffer from various behavioral and psychological problems. Alcohol causes various health problems as well among which liver breakdown is the most common. There are also several complications in the social life of people who consume alcohol.
Alcohol consumption not only affects the health of people but also their social lives. I think teenagers should be kept away from alcohol before they get addicted to it. By lowering the age we are not only letting them drink, but also spoiling the future of our nation. I think the author is very wrong here to support the point to lower the drinking age. Most of us believe that responsibility comes with experience and I think one must be responsible to drink. At last, I would like to mention a quote I read somewhere I cant recall- “The first thing in the human personality that dissolves in alcohol is dignity”
